TLS Trading Card Game Rule Book
Welcome to the world of The Lone Swordsman, a world where Demons have begun their invasion of Earth and only a select few stand a chance against them. The TLS Trading Card Game is based on the Webcomic, The Lone Swordsman. (www.theloneswordsman.com)
Objective
This game is designed to simulate a fight between characters. Thus, there is one and only one method of winning. Defeat your opponent. In order to do so, you must bring their HP down to 0, not once, but twice. After your HP drops to 0 the first time, your character gets their “Second Wind” and begins back at full health, with no stoppage in play. If you fall again after getting your Second Wind, then you lose the game.
Basics
Turns occur at the same time, with both players playing their cards face down in front of them, and then flipping them face up at the same time. Battle is conducted in a Rock-Paper-Scissors like format. Attack Cards beat Special Cards, Special Cards beat Guard Cards, and Guard Cards beat Attack Cards. If two cards of the same type are played, then both cards effects are activated. You always have five cards in your hand. If you are unable to draw during the turn, then your opponent will get a free attack on you, and you can re-shuffle your discard pile and place it face down on the deck pile.
Card Types
There are a total of six different types of cards. Character Cards, Attack Cards, Special Cards, Guard Cards, Support Cards and Evolution Cards. The different types of Cards will be explained in detail below.
Character Cards
These cards are unique, in that they do not go into your Deck. You must have at least a Level 1 Character card in order to play with that Character. All Starter Decks come with the Level 1 version of various characters. Character Cards contain the following information: Level (1-3), HP, Alignment, Race, and Abilities. Abilities can include things such as dealing additional damage against those of a certain Alignment or Race, or dealing less damage to a certain Alignment or Race. In order to play a Level 2 or 3, an Evolution Card will be required. (See Evolution Cards)
Example
The Lone Swordsman
Card Type: Character
Level 1
HP: 500
Alignment: Good
Race: Human
Abilitiy: The Avenger: Deal X1.5 more damage against Evil Characters, but deal ½ damage against Good Characters.
Quote: “Even my own name is lost within the names of the souls that now haunt me and give me strength.”
Attack Cards
Attacks are faster than Specials, but are stopped dead by Guards. Attacks are probably the most common types of cards you’ll find. Very few have special effects, but they are good for combo attacks. Attack Cards are limited to the Character specified in the Card’s Name. Attacks also have an Attack Level. A Character can only use Attack Cards equal to their Level or lower.
Example
Lone’s Sword Slash
Card Type: Attack
Attack Level: 1
Attack Type: Melee
Text: A basic slash of The Lone Swordsman’s sword, dealing 25 damage.
Quote: “Enough talk!”
Special Cards
Specials are too powerful for a Guard to stop, but are too slow to protect against an Attack. Specials are usually more powerful than Attacks, and can more often than not contain special effects. Special Cards are limited to the Character specified in the Card’s Name. Specials also have a Special Level. A Character can only use Special Cards equal to their Level or lower.
Example
Elite Demon’s Dark Slash
Card Type: Special
Special Level: 1
Text: A powerful beam of dark energy unleashed from an Elite Demon’s Sword. Deals 100 Damage, and 25 Bleeding Damage over the next two turns.
Quote: “My secret technique, Dark Slash!”
Guard Cards
Guards can stop any Attack, but aren’t strong enough to stop a Special. Guards are key cards to have against an Attack heavy deck. Not all Guards deal damage, but they often contain special effects, including allowing you a free hit on them next turn. Guard Cards are limited to the Character specified in the Card’s Name. Guards also have a Guard Level. A Character can only use Guard Cards equal to their Level or lower.
Example
Lone’s Return to Sender
Card Type: Guard
Guard Level: 1
Text: A quick movement of The Lone Swordsman’s sword that can deflect projectiles. If Guarding against a Ranged type Attack, the Attack is bounced back at your opponent.
Quote: “Return to Sender!”
Support Cards
Support Cards contain various effects that can help you or hinder your opponent. Unlike the other types of Cards, Support Cards are universal and can be used for any Character. The only exception is if the Card specifies a Race, Alignment and/or Level restriction. When using a Support Card, your opponent’s move will go through for a free hit, and then the effect of the Support resolves, unless the card states otherwise.
Example
Sypher’s Healing Herbs
Card Type: Support
Text: Fully restores your HP. Can only be used once per Battle.
Quote: “I’m the one who saved your life, that’s who! Although it was Sypher who patched you up.”
Evolution Cards
Evolution Cards work like Support Cards, in that your opponent will get a free hit. Evolution Cards are used for Evolving a Character to the next Level. They will specify to evolve a specific Character to another specific Character. Evolved Characters often have more HP, but they still retain any damage they took at the previous level(s).
Example
Jester Hats
Card Type: Evolution
Text: Evolves an Elite Demon into The Jester Brothers.
Quote: “We are the Jester Brothers!” “A funnier pair of Demons you will never see!”
Combos
When playing cards for your turn, if they are of the same name, they can be played in a Combo. Combos combine the damage and/or effects of the cards used, but be wary of cards that can throw your attack back at you. Support Cards cannot be used for Combos, unless they specify that it can be used with another Card in a Combo.
Deck and Card Restrictions
There are no limits to how many cards you have to put in your deck, or how many cards of the same name you can put in your deck. However, this is where the skill of Deck Building comes in. Having a low amount of cards in your Deck can mean fast Evolution, but it also means you’ll be having to lose a turn re-loading your Deck quite often. Some Cards state they can only be used a certain amount of times per Battle. You can still have multiples of these cards in your Deck, but if you play them, they will have no effect and your opponent will get a free hit. The same is true for Evolution Cards. Having a lot of High Level Cards can be useful if you can pull off your Evolutions quickly, but be wary of being stuck at too low a level and having a lot of cards that you can’t use in your hand. If you play a Card that is too high level, it will have no effect and your opponent will get a free attack.
Rounding Damage
When using an Ability that multiplies or reduces damage, round down to the nearest 25. For example, when dealing 75 damage normally, and your damage is halved, damage would be reduced to 25. Damage cannot go lower than 25.
Second Wind
Second Wind is what occurs when your HP goes down to 0 for the first time. Any extra damage or effects are not carried over after obtaining your Second Wind. Some Characters have special abilities or even Evolutions that activate upon receiving your Second Wind, so keep special mind of this during a battle.
Starter Decks
Starter Decks are essential if you wish to play as a particular Character, as the only way to obtain Level 1 Character Cards is by buying their Starter Deck. A Starter Deck, while playable, contains only the essential and basic cards needed for that Character. In order to bring out that Character’s full potential, you’ll have to buy Booster Packs. The following is the list of currently available Starter Decks. More Decks will be available as the story progresses.
